Finley Farms Kindergarteners Use Robotics to Code Their Favorite Stories

This week in Mrs. Orozco’s Accelerated Kindergarten class, students used Ozobots to explore the relationship between storytelling and logic. Working with Technology Integration Educator (TIE) Mrs. Heermans, these young learners used color codes to program their robots to follow a path that mirrored the events in their current reading assignments.
The project required students to translate what they read on the page into physical movements for their Ozobots. As they followed along with their stories, the junior coders had to determine the appropriate response for their bot:
- Speed Control: Students chose specific color sequences to make the bot go fast or slow, depending on the plot.
- Movement Logic: For certain parts of the story, students programmed their bots to spin or navigate specific turns.
- Pathfinding: Each student colored a path according to a code, then watched to see if their bot executed the movements as planned.
By bringing Mrs. Heermans into the Accelerated Kindergarten classroom, Finley Farms students were able to tie specialized technology tools, like Ozobots, directly into the lessons that they are learning.
